How do you know where you're going if you don't know where you're coming from?
In an attempt to become closer with our ancestors, we began a journey that involved hundreds of hours of research but ended up being beyond rewarding. We began tracking our family lineage and with each and every discovery we felt more connected. From photos of great-great grandparents to marriage records of great-great-great grandparents, we have realized this: family is more than people, it is connection. We finally feel connected on a deeper level and we plan to use these connections to guide our travels. Stephanie found out she is half German and half English. Zach is English, Dutch, Welsh, and German. So we are excited more than ever to journey to these DESTINATIONS of our ancestors.
Below are our 8 family trees (4 for Steph plus 4 for Zach). Most of our research was done using Ancestry.com and with the help of family. If you'd like this information in document form (including the appendices with historical documents/photos) please email us at info@www.dorworthadventures.com with the subject "Family Tree Inquiry". Generation No. 2
2. ROBERT MASON was born April 7, 1757 in STEPNEY, London, England and died September 25, 1849 in CLEAR CREEK, Knox County, Kentucky. He married MARY KING around 1779 or 1783 in Kentucky. She was born May 9, 1760 in South Carolina and died April 13, 1842 in CLEAR CREEK, Knox county, Kentucky. Her maiden name is unknown but it is possible she was Cherokee Indian. Her father’s name was JAMES. ROBERT was buried in Mason Cemetery, Bell County, Kentucky. (Appendix #1: Baptism record) (Appendix #2: 1790 census) (Appendix #3: 1810 census) (Appendix #4: 1820 census) (Appendix #5: 1830 census) (Appendix #6: 1840 census) (Appendix #7: Tombstone of ROBERT and MARY)
ROBERT immigrated to America (Virginia) in January 1775 on the Adventurer ship along with another young man named William Evans (age 19) from STEPNEY, England. It is possible they were related. Robert was listed as being a gunsmith and there was a large arms factory in STEPNEY at the time. William Evans was listed as a gardener. All the passengers on the ship were indentured to sponsors in America to repay their passage aboard the ship. Robert served his 3 year long indenture in Hampshire county which is now located in West Virginia.
In early 1779 Robert enlisted in the State Troops of Virginia and served in the 11th Regiment under Col. Acfrew Buford in the Revolutionary War. One of the many battles he fought in was the Battle of Hanging Rock. He was at Buford’s Massacre aka the Battle of Waxhaws (May 29, 1780), during which his regiment took severe losses due to tactical error on the part of Col. Buford. During a white flag of truce, 110 American soldiers were killed, 150 wounded and 53 taken prisoner by the British army. Robert was discharged from service in July or August of 1780. He was denied a war pension due to lack of proof. Pension denial:
Declaration
In order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress Of the 7th of June 1832. On the 24th day of April personally appeared in open court the following individuals, Ambrose M. Anderson, James Pogue and James Barton.
Justices of the Knox County court.
Robert Mason, a resident of Clear Creek in the county of Knox and state of Kentucky aged 80 years on the 7th of April last past who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed on 7th of June 1832.
That he enlisted in the state troops of Virginia in the year 1779 in the latter part of January or first of February and served in he thinks the 11th Regiment of the Virginia state troops with John Young, Frank Dyer, John Procter and many others under the following named officer, Abraham Buford Col., Andrew Wallace Captain (he had another brother, a captain in the same Regiment by the name of Adam Wallace) Marks Lieutenant.
John Procter orderly sergeant, the name of his Major and Ensign has faded from his memory.
When he enlisted he lived in the county of Hampshire and state of Virginia. He states that they took both down the time of his enlistment a minute statement of his age, size, height and the color of his complexion, hair, eyes, etc.
He marched shortly after his enlistment to Winchester, Virginia to Bill Haven. He thinks it is now called Alexandria. Thence to Dumfries, thence to Fredericksburg, thence to Williamsburg, thence to Petersburg, where we took up our winter guard and stayed until spring. Thence to Hillsborough, North Carolina, thence to Salisbury, thence through a town called Charlotte in Mecklenburg thence to Camden, thence to Parke where we encamped a few days. While here Col. White crossed the Santee and captured a foraging party of the enemy which were retaken from him in a skirmish in which he lost some of his light horse. We then understood that the British were advancing upon us and scouting out to meet them we fell back to the Hanging Rock when we were overtaken by the British as he understood under Talton. A battle ensued in which was defeated with considerable loss of men, cannon, baggage, wagons. This battle was fought upon the 25th May, 1780 thence we retreated to Hillsborough in North Carolina and when he was discharged on July or August 1780 he had a written discharge from his captain Andrew Wallace by the order of his Col. Buford but whether the discharge was signed by Wallace or Buford he does not remember. He states that his discharge has long since been lost, indeed after the war, he placed no notice upon it, not supposing it would ever be of any service to him.
He states that he lives at the distance of twenty four miles from Knox courthouse by the most traveling route, that he postponed his application because he was unwilling to accept the proffered bounty of the government as long as he was able to work and make a living without it but being pressed by his friends and by his poverty he has at last commenced to proven his claim.
He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and he declares that his name is not on the pension roll of any agency in any state. Sworn and subscribed this day and date afore signed.
Robert (X) Mason
ROBERT and MARY appear to have lived in North Carolina until around 1795 they moved to Tennessee and around 1806 moved to Kentucky. On September 18, 1819 he applied for and received a land grant for land on Clear Creek, Kentucky where they remained the rest of their lives.
Robert Mason died at the age of 92. Before he died he presented his sons with the farm on which he received a land grant on the condition they take care of him and Mary the rest of their lives. He had one final request before he died. He wished to be buried in the cellar of his house. Robert Mason’s house stood at the present day site of the Mason Cemetery. A grave stone now marks Robert’s burial site.
At some point in life, a Mrs Henry Lambert accused Robert in court of being “a dad-burned hog-thief” but that suit was later dismissed.
At ROBERT’S stone dedication on June 10, 1990 it was stated (according to Dee Barton’s report):
Did Robert accomplish much? Well, he owned his own land. He left an inheritance for his family. Most of all he played a part in building America! He fought for her freedom! He caught the fever of new land over the horizon, and went to the frontier, to live amongst Indians and wild beasts! I believe that the verse in Genesis (Chapter 13; v 15) applies to Robert Mason as much as it did to Abraham---- “And I will make they seed as the dust of the earth, so that man can number the dust of the earth, then shall they seed also be numbered.” Did Robert have seed? It is beyond numbering. However, I can tell this, that the portion of his seed through his daughter Sarah numbers more than 6,000 souls. If other children were as prolific, we could estimate over 50,000 descendents have arisen from Robert! Let us rise up and call him blessed!

Excerpt from the History of Bell County, Kentucky by a grandson of PHILLIP LEE:
James Mason lived on the upper part of Little Clear Creek at the mouth of Big Laurel Branch. He owned a large boundary of timber and coal lands there. He was a very learned man in the Bible, being able to repeat a large part of it. His knowledge of the Bible was so exact that no one, not even the preachers, cared to argue with him. He usually got the best of the argument, if he argued with anyone, and he knew it. I remember James Mason well. He was an old man when I was a boy, and was much respected on the creek for his honesty and integrity. Considerable excitement was created by his finding on his farm that was thought to be a silver mine. Upon examination the ores turned out to be some worthless kind of ore, but he died in the belief that he had a rich silver mine on his property. He had three brothers and a sister that I remember: Bratcher, Rev John, Will, and Martha (who became the second wife of my grandfather Phillip Lee). His children were William, Boshy, John James, Becky, Lundy Mason. Most of these children moved to Ohio around 1900 when the Log Mountain Company bought up the land in that region.
SARAH EVANS had 3 siblings: WILLIAM K EVANS, JANE EVANS, and ROBERT EVANS. Their parents are WILLIAM EVANS and MARGARET BULL. The parents of WILLIAM are JOHN EVANS and SARAH HAYNES. The father of JOHN EVANS is WILLIAM EVANS SR born in 1775 in Kentucky.

[Addition: SHACKLEFORD Family History]
Descendents of JOHN SHACKLEFORD
(Spelling may be SHACKELFORD or DeSHACKELFORD)
Generation No 1
1. WILLIAM DE SHACKLEFORD was born 1490 in SHACKLEFORD VILLAGE, GODALMING, SURREY, England and died in ST PIERE, Netherlands. He moved to France in 1550 when he joined the Huguenots and he was in the army of Navarre (1553-1610). There he married a woman with the last name of ST PIERRE sometime after 1550. They went to the Netherlands together where they both died.
Child of WILLIAM DE SHACKELFORD and ST PIERRE:
i) LANCELOT SHACKLEFORD, b. 1540 in HAMPSHIRE, England; d. In England
The American branch of the Shackelfords is generally believed to have
descended from Baron Jacques-le-Forte, who was a nobleman in Normandy and
an officer in the army of William the Conqueror, when he overran England
in 1066. William the Conqueror granted him land, and this land became
the ancestral seat of the family in Godalming Parish, Surry County,
England (about 39 miles northwest of London) [actually SW].The town was
called Shackelford Village, but in 1620 it passed from the Shackelfords
to the Earl of Middleton. (The name appears in old records with the
spelling "Shackleford" as well as "Shackelford.")
Henry de Shackelford was a Gentleman in Waiting for Henry V circa 1390.
William de Shackelford was a descendant of Henry.

vii) SARAH SHACKLEFORD, b. 1638
Generation No 4
4. ROGER SHACKLEFORD was born April 23, 1629 in ESSEX, England and died in 1704 in KING AND QUEEN, Virginia. He married MARY PALMER in 1660. She was born September 20, 1629 in ESSEX, England and died 1729 in ABINGTON, Virginia. They immigrated to the US together and had FRANCIS SHACKLEFORD there.
Children of ROGER SHACKLEFORD and MARY PALMER are:
i) Shackelford, Benjamin
ii) Shackelford, James (1662 - 1734)
iii) Shackelford, Zachariah (1666 - )
v) Shackelford, Francis (1675 - 1725)
vi) Shackelford, Zeheriah (~1675 - )
vii) Shackelford, Benjamin (~1677 - )

xi) Shackelford, Charles (~1681 - )
xii) Shackelford, William (~1683 - )
xiii) Shackelford, Roger (~1683 - )
xiv) Shackelford, William (~1685 - >1731)
It is known from the records that Edward Palmer, from England,
received a patent or grant of 400 acres in Gloucester for the
transportation of eight persons, including Roger Shackelford. The date of
this grant was June 4, 1658. The actual arrival of those transported must
have been a year or more before this date.
Edward Palmer had a sister, Mary, on this list and there is good reason
to believe Roger Shackelford married Mary Palmer.
The following land grant (Land Book VI, p. 665) to Roger appears under
date of Nov. 20, 1678, during the Governorship of Sir Herbert Jeffries.
"Roger Shackelford-313 acres of land in Gloucester County, Virginia,
beginning to be measured at a corner chestnut tree standing near
Mataponyold path and touching the land of Edward Palmer, Mr.
Patridge, by the branch on the back side of the said Roger Shackelford's
now plantation. The land being due the said Roger Shackelford by two
several purchases and by virtue of a deed of sale from Mr. Samuel
Patridge and Thomas Hawks who are now both deceased and now plainly
marked with lines and corner trees according to the above mentioned
bounds". (Note: - By the wording of the above it is seen that Roger
already had one plantation.)
In Virginia Quit Rent Rolls taken 1704, "a true account of the lands in
King and Queen County, Virginia, as it was taken by Robert Bird, Sheriff,
we find the name Roger Shackelford, 250 acres".
Roger Shackelford appears as a member of the vestry of Petsworth Parish,
Sept. 13, 1679. On October 14, 1680, Roger was appointed Church Warden,
in same Parish for the "ensuing year" for upper part of Parish.
Roger was present as a Warden at a Vestry Meeting, Oct. 24, 1682 and
again Sept. 24, 1683. At that time in Virginia's history Vestrymen and
Wardens and those elected "to procession", were chosen only from the most
substantial citizens.
I do not know the exact location in either Gloucester or King and Queen
counties where Roger and Mary Palmer, his wife, lived. Search has been
made to find Roger's will, but without success. The date of his death and
place of burial are also lost to any records I can find, but he must have
died after 1704, as he appears on the Quit Rent Roll for that year.
It is not definitely known how many children he left to survive him, but
certainly James, Francis and John were his sons, also Zachariah and very
probably others.
Generation No 5
5. FRANCIS SHACKLEFORD was born 1664 in ESSEX, Virginia and died in 1725 or 1726 in BATH, North Carolina. He married SARAH VIRGINIA LEWIS in 1695. Her father was JOHN LEWIS and mother was SARAH NICHOLAS. Possible second marriage to MARY LIVINGSTON.
Francis Shackelford owned 395 acres of land lying in the freshes of the Rappahannock about four miles from the river side on the south side of the river, adjoining the land of William Hudson - and intersecting a path to Portobacco - touching the land of John Amos. Francis Shackelford and Daniel Mackgirt 1316 acres of land lying in the forest between the Rappahannock and Mattaponi rivers.
The LEWIS family that Francis Shackleford married into wasLewis (Ednywain ap Bradwen) of Abernant Bychan, Cardiganshire."This family is descended from the founder of the 15th Noble Tribe of North Wales, whose arms are 3 silver snakes in a knot on a red shield. The crese, a horse's head couped, bridled proper, comes from the marriage to an heiress of the Grono Goch family."Grono Goch's lineage goes back to Yspwys of Moel Ysbiddon which means "Mount of Strangers" since he is thought to have come from Spain with Uther Pendragon and Aurelius

*On January 17, 1781 in SPARTANBURG, South Carolina, the Battle of Cowpens took place during the American Revolution. (Appendix #32: Battle of Cowpens Monument)
Relying upon strategic creativity, Brigadier General Daniel Morgan and a mixed Patriot force rout British Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton and a group of Redcoats and Loyalists at the Battle of Cowpens on this day in 1781.
Commander in chief of the Southern Army, Major General Nathaniel Greene had decided to divide Patriot forces in the Carolinas in order to force the larger British contingent under General Charles Cornwallis to fight them on multiple fronts—and because smaller groups of men were easier for the beleaguered Patriots to feed. Daniel Morgan took 300 Continental riflemen and 740 militiamen with the intention of attacking the British backcountry fort, Ninety-Six.
In response, Cornwallis dispatched Tarleton with 1,100 Redcoats and Loyalists to catch Morgan, whom he feared might instigate a broad-based backcountry Patriot uprising. Morgan prepared for the encounter with Tarleton by backing his men up to a river at Cowpens, north of Ninety-Six.
As Tarleton’s men attacked, Morgan instructed the militia to skirmish with them, but to leave the front line after firing two rounds. The British mistook the repositioning of the Americans as a rout and ran into an unexpected volley of concentrated rifle fire coupled with a cavalry charge and followed by the return of the militia. Tarleton escaped, but Morgan’s troops decimated his army.
American rifles, scorned by Britain’s professional soldiers, proved devastatingly effective in this engagement. The British lost 110 men and more than 200 more were wounded, while an additional 500 were captured. The American losses totaled only 12 killed and 60 wounded in the first Patriot victory to demonstrate that the American forces could outfight a similar British force without any other factors—such as surprise or geography—to assist them.

*RYE is in WestChester, New York now but it used to be RYE, Connecticut. The first settlement in the Town of Rye was made in 1660. Originally Rye was land between the Byram and Blind Brook Rivers. Land west of Blind Brook and east of Stonybrook called Budd's Neck. Rye was included in limits of the Colony of Connecticut on May 30, 1663. On September 5, 1664, New Netherlands surrendered and became the Province of New York.

MARY ELIZABETH BRUNDAGE (BRUNDISH) later re-married JOHN HOIT/HOYT (from Nova Scotia).
Excerpt from “The Purdy Family History” Book:
The Brundish's immigrated in 1633 and lived at Salem, Mass., then Watertown, Mass. and then Fairfield, Connecticut In one write-up it states that "John is to have been killed by Indians, in another it states that he took his own 'lyfe'." After John's death, Rachael married Anthony Wilson of Fairfield, Connecticut
Mary was the granddaughter of James Hubbard and Naomi Cook of Mendelsham, Suffolk, England. (Hubbard History by Harlan Page Hubbard, N. Y. 1895).
After Francis Purdy died Mary married John Hoit and moved to Rye which was then in Connecticut John Hoit was the son of Simon Hoit, the ancestor of several Hoit families in Nova Scotia.
In "One Thousand Years of Hubbard History - 1866-1895", by Harlan Page Hubbard, N. Y. 1895 (page 53) he states:
"James and Naomi (Cook) Hubbard, of Mendelsham, Suffolk, England, were the parents of ten children - Benjamin, James, Rachel, Samuel came to America..... Rachel married John Brundish, of Ipswich, Suffolk, England, and came to New England in 1633. They lived in Salem, Mass., Wethersfield, Connecticut and Fairfield, Connecticut and had children.
"Mary, born in Ipswich, England, in 1628, married Francis Purdy, of Fairfield, Conn." If the date of 1628 is correct for Mary's birth, she would have been only 14 years old in 1642. If married in 1639, when Francis Purdy first appeared at Fairfield, she would have been only 11 or 12.
On January 6, 1644/45, Francis Purdy and his wife, Mary Purdy, were witnesses to the will of their neighbor, William Frost ("Families of Old Fairfield", O. L. Jacobus, Page 211, Vol. 1).
